I care a lot about food issues. I favor small, local farms producing regionally appropriate vegetables and animals over Big Ag and industrial food systems. So when I first heard about the fight over the Michigan Department of Natural Resources outlawing "heritage breeds" of pigs being raised by small farmers, I was upset. I believe in the value of small farms and heritage breeds. But as I dug into the issue, I found it to be a confusing mixed of political ideologies.
